WELCOME TO THE AUSTRALIAN SOLAR THERMAL ENERGY ASSOCIATION

On 8 December 2010, a number of companies with investment interests in solar thermal energy in Australia met in Sydney to discuss the merits of forming an organisation dedicated to advancing the interests of the solar thermal industry in Australia.

A strong consensus emerged that there was a clear and urgent need for stronger and more consistent focus on issues affecting the development of Australia’s solar thermal power industry, and for a body devoted solely to providing this task.

The Australian Solar Thermal Energy Association (AUSTELA) was formed on 31 January 2011 Learn more...

International Energy Agency (IEA) - World Energy Outlook 2011 and Solar Perspectives 2011

IEA is an autonomous organisation which works to ensure reliable, affordable and clean energy for its 28 member countries and beyond. Founded in response to the 1973/4 oil crisis, the IEA’s initial role was to help countries co-ordinate a collective response to major disruptions in oil supply through the release of emergency oil stocks to the markets.

Two recent publications of the IEA provide useful information in relation to the role and potential of solar thermal power in the world's energy markets:

Macroeconomic impact of the Solar Thermal Electricity Industry in Spain.

In the last three years, Solar Thermal Electricity (STE) in Spain has grown significantly. Its weight within the renewables mix is becoming relevant, and even more so, its impact on economics, society, the environment, and reducing energy dependence.

This report was carried out by Deloitte for Protermosolar to quantitatively and qualitatively evaluate the main macroeconomic variables derived from the development of this technology in Spain from 2008 to 2010, and forecast its possible future impact. Read the report... (pdf)

World Solar Thermal Electricity Association

AUSTELA has joined forces with the solar thermal industry bodies in Europe and South Africa to form the World Solar Thermal Electricity Association, whose purpose is to engage with global energy, carbon and economic development agencies. Announcement of the new organization, to be known as STELAWorld, was made in Paris on 18 October 2011, alongside the biennial International Energy Agency (IEA) Ministerial Meeting chaired by Australia’s Federal Resources and Energy Minister, Martin Ferguson.
